The Shire of Coolgardie is proud to be part of the Royal Lifesaving of Western Australia’s Swim for Fruit Program. This is the first time the Shire has offered this program and it’s been a resounding success.
“Swim for Fruit” is an after school program encouraging physical activity and a healthy lifestyle through swimming activities with a fruit snack.
The response has been overwhelming with over 30 youths between 6-17 years old participating in the program.
Just one month in, there has already been a noticeable improvement in swimming skills across the board.
Younger children have become more confident in the water, whilst older children are now incorporating training sessions that can lead towards the completion of a bronze medallion. The stamina to achieve target laps and the fun of competing against each other has driven this outcome.
The Coolgardie staff have thoroughly enjoyed delivering the program.
“The best part is when the fruit is served, we have a few giggles because the children are being treated to fruit they have never eaten before” said Kathy Brooking, Shire of Coolgardie Aquatic Manager.
It has been great to see the consistency of attendance and enthusiasm from all the participants. Registrations are still open for the remainder of the program, simply complete a registration form available at the Coolgardie Recreation Centre
The program has been part funded through the Royal Lifesaving of Western Australia.
The Shire look forward to hosting the program again next year!
