Following the terrible floods that devastated the Kimberley region in recent weeks, DFES put a call out for two volunteers from each Western Australian region ranging from Donnybrook to Karratha.
Steven Forward, one of our long-standing staff members here at the Shire of Coolgardie answered the call. Steve is a Coolgardie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Volunteer and was on the first plane out to help assist the floods in the Kimberley.
Away for a week, Steven spent his time on a range of tasks from preparing food packs for flood victims, cooking food for community volunteers to extinguishing a fire at the collapsed Fitzroy River Bridge.
Working alongside dozens of SES and DFES volunteers Steve assisted families in Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and communities throughout the Kimberley. Steve stated ,
“I was happy to go and assist, as a DFES volunteer you just jump in and assist with everything and anything where needed, every little bit helps”
The Shire of Coolgardie’s thoughts go out to all who have suffered and are still currently suffering from the devastating floods.
