Upon the release of the recent budget review conducted by the Shire of Coolgardie we have recognised some areas of concern expressed by the community.

The Shire of Coolgardie acknowledges and understands the community's concerns regarding the current financial situation and the challenges ahead.

Shire of Coolgardie Acting CEO, Aaron Cook, thanked the community for their patience and understanding while the Shire works towards a more resilient and enduring future.

“Transparency and accountability remain our priorities as we work through these issues”, he said.

“Council's decision-making has always been driven by a hopeful and aspirational vision for the community. While this vision remains, we now require a shift in approach to restore long-term sustainability. Council is actively working towards a more viable future and is ready to make the decisions necessary to achieve this.”

Concerns raised within the community centre around common themes of accountability and responsibility, the impacts of decisions on services and budget considerations, staffing matters, and the ongoing investigation into the Shire CEO.

The Shire is committed to addressing these concerns as part of ongoing transparent communications.

Accountability and Responsibility

The Shire President and Council acknowledge the financial situation has occurred under our watch. In response, Council is actively working alongside the Acting Chief Executive Officer to address the challenges, rectify what can be resolved, and implement strategies to secure a stronger financial future for our Shire.

Impact on Services and Budget Considerations

At this stage, no final decisions have been made regarding rates, as the Budget is still under development. While some services across the Shire may be impacted, Council is committed to minimising these effects wherever possible. We appreciate the community’s patience and will provide updates as soon as decisions are confirmed.

Staffing Matters

At present, the CEO remains on full pay while stood down. We are unable to comment further on personnel matters due to confidentiality requirements.

Investigation Recommendations

As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide further specifics at this stage. However, we remain committed to transparency and will share updates when possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Leading by Example

Council is leading by example by making necessary sacrifices to support financial sustainability. In this spirit, elected members have unanimously decided to forego superannuation payments for the next 12 months. This decision reflects our commitment to the community and to responsible financial management.

Council remains dedicated to ensuring financial stability and the continued provision of essential services.
