In October 2019, the Shire of Coolgardie received funding though the Royal Life Savings WA , to run a Swim for Fruit program which aims to get kids active in the pool, eat healthier and build their swimming skills in preparation for the hot Goldfields summer.
The Laverton Aquatic Facility ran a similar program and the two Aquatic Managers, organised a program wrap-up in Laverton in early February. Shire staff and volunteer parents took 13 children from Coolgardie to Laverton to swim in a grand final Swim for Fruit competition in their new pool. Children also enjoyed a barbecue lunch, lots of fresh fruit and other games during the day.
The Shire’s Aquatic Facility Manager also had the opportunity to tour the brand new Laverton Aquatic Facility to learn about their operations and plant maintenance.
This was the second time this year, that the two Shire’s have shared information and worked together. In November, the Shire’s Leanne Shilton, Coolgardie Recreation and Community Development Manager, went to Laverton to learn more about their youth centre and programs. These award winning programs are being rolled out in our communities in 2020.
