Yesterday, ahead of the March 13 State election, Kalgoorlie Labor Candidate, Ali Kent announced a major election commitment from the McGowan Labor Government to the Shire of Coolgardie.
Ms Kent pledged $75,000 from the State Government for the establishment of an undercover equestrian arena in Coolgardie.
Shire of Coolgardie President Malcolm Cullen viewed the one-of-a-kind centre as a major boost for Coolgardie’s active Horse and Pony Association, but with numerous other groups and organisations also benefactors.
The arena would be a multi-disciplinary facility capable of also hosting concerts, festivals, trade shows and sporting events.
“The Shire of Coolgardie is committed to seeing this project come to fruition because it has wide-ranging benefits for so many people living in the Shire,” Cr Cullen said.
“It would not only be great for the residents of Coolgardie and surrounding areas with strong equine interests, but also as a state-of-the-art venue for a vast array of other events.
“I see this type of facility as vitally important for the community on so many fronts.”
At Tuesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Council provided in-principle support for the development, subject to an assessment of an appropriate location, final costings, leasing arrangements and external funding. It followed an approach to the Shire by stakeholders from various government, community, and sporting organisations for the enhancement of equine activities in Coolgardie.
Coolgardie boasts 40 active horse and pony members, with an additional 20-plus from Kalgoorlie-Boulder travelling to the town for monthly competitions.
Ms Kent viewed the facility as having great potential to boost tourism numbers in the Shire.
“The arena will also be a huge drawcard for visiting horse riders and enthusiasts, encouraging more frequent visitors to Coolgardie, resulting in a boost to economic activity in the town,” she said.
“Visiting specialists such as horse dentists, vets and farriers would have a much more suitable space to offer their services to the local population.
“Spectators would also be able to enjoy events without being affected by the weather conditions.”
