R U OK? Day, held Thursday 9 September every year, is a national day of action that reinforces the importance of staying connected with friends, family and colleagues through all life’s ups and downs, big or small.
We are all facing challenging times and the message shared on the day with a community event hosted by the Kambalda Community Resource Centre was "That it is ok, not to be ok" but just as important to know where to get help and support.
Since joining R U OK? the Shire of Coolgardie has continued to connect the community by inviting service providers to our Recreation Facilities as well as holding and acknowledging events such as Mens Health month earlier this year, Womens Health Week this September and Mental Health Week coming up next month to allow for meaningful conversations to be started all year round.
For this year's event service providers Centrecare, Bega Garnbirringu and Mara Pirni Healing Place from Kalgoorlie were present offering advise, brochures and valuable information and they even brought some treats along too.
Our wonderful volunteers from the Kambalda Volunteer Fire & Rescue donated their time on morning to assist with the BBQ and throughout the event by ensuring those sausages were cooked to perfection and taking the opportunity to meet with the community. After all our first responders who are putting their lifes on the line for their community, may be facing the same struggles.
The Morning spent in the spring sunshine allowed everyone in attendance to connect with others and possibly make a difference in someone’s life by just simply asking the question “R U Ok?”.
With over 40 community members attending, amongst them the Leadership Group from the Kambalda West District High School as well as young families, we hope that the message can be shared to help better identify if someone may be struggling and how to best support them.
None of us are immune to life's challenges and opening up about the breakdown of a relationship, financial difficulties, something going on in one's work life, or the loss of a loved one is not showing a weakness but rather shows how strong you are for reaching out.
What a great way to connect our community members to service providers who can offer the support needed.
