Congratulations to our Tourism and Heritage Coordinator Kat Fox on 5 years of service with the Shire of Coolgardie at the Coolgardie Visitors Centre.
We asked Kat a few questions about her time with the Shire.
- What was you first position at the SoC?
I was originally employed as a full time Visitors Services Officer, once I completed my probation I became Recreation & Community Services Team Leader before my title was changed to Tourism & Heritage Coordinator to better reflect my role.
- What other roes have you held at the SoC?
I have always held Tourism role while working for the Shire, while also assisting in Recreation when needed.
- What do you enjoy most about working at the SoC?
The people I work with, my team are fantastic! And the challenges of new and exciting projects I get to work on.
- What do you hope to achieve while working at the SoC?
I hope to make a difference in our community through events and to raise the tourism profile of Coolgardie through promotion of our tourism assets and the history of Coolgardie and Kambalda.
- What are some of the highlights of your career?
Creating the Coolgardie Makers Market, expanding the Museum and opening the new Visitors Centre have all been highlights of my time with SoC.
- What tips can you give to anyone thinking about working in Tourism?
Tourism is a great industry if you have a passion for your town/region and for travel. Explore your own backyard, you might be surprised at the amazing places you will find! You need to have a love of working with people and be adaptable, you never know who you are going to meet or where they are from so every day is different and every traveller has their own story to share.
- Give us your best spot to visit in the Shire of Coolgardie?
For visitors I would definitely recommend Coolgardie’s Goldfields Exhibition Museum, there is so much history, and so many stories in such a beautiful building! From a local view my favourite place to explore is Burra Rock, it is always so beautiful, close enough for a day trip and great for camping too!
