Community wellbeing a priority for the Shire

The Shire of Coolgardie has recently launched a wellness program to support community members during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

Last week, Shire staff commenced routine telephone calls to seniors and other members of the community to check in, have a chat and offer support where needed.

Shire President Malcolm Cullen said feedback from the community on the program so far has been positive.

“As our older and at-risk residents have been asked to self-isolate, we think it’s important that the Shire offers a way to proactively reach out to these community members and offer assistance.”

“Many of the individuals contacted are feeling positive and appreciate the Shire’s regular updates regarding COVID-19.”

During the first week of the program, over 70 wellness checks were completed in Coolgardie and Kambalda. Over 40% of people contacted requested a weekly call back, and many made recommendations of others in the community who are isolated or at-risk and would benefit from a call.

Shire of Coolgardie staff are also offering basic IT support over the phone to seniors who require assistance accessing their emails, MyGov website or Facebook.

“We thank the Shire of Coolgardie community for coming together and supporting one another during this time,” said Cr Cullen.

The wellness checks initiative forms part of a larger COVID-19 Community Support Program being rolled out by the Shire of Coolgardie.
