On Thursday, 26 August 2021 we transformed the Kambalda Public Library into a theme of old worlds, new worlds and other worlds along with a handmade time machine and props that magically turned children into dragons, robots and a knight for CBCA Book Week 2021.
We were lucky enough to also welcome local author Sara Whincup and illustrator Elvis Moody who read their joint children's book “Where Wild Emus Roam” and walked us slowly through the pages to spot Western Australian woodlands animals throughout the book. Sara enthusiastically reading the book to our young Special Storytime audience also joined in singing songs while Elvis, who illustrated the book played the didgeridoo along that Morning.
Parents and children were encouraged to make up songs about animals from the story and were invited to sing and dance and play musical bob and musical statues all dressed up as their favourite character for CBCA Book Week. Amongst the wonderful costumes we saw superheros, princesses and other fictive and creative outfits. The kids actively participated in all craft activities on offer to reflect on this years theme ranging from DIY galaxy star jars, Egyptian mask making and creating their own colourful emus with glitter, paint and feathers to reflect on the story being read for this years event.
The highlight after meeting our visiting author was the announcement of the winners for their beautifully designed emus and the winner of the colouring in competition. Izaiah and River both did so well with their emu designs and it wasn't hard for author Sara to judge on their great work. Olivia out of all entries impressed with her work being so detailed with her colouring in and won a signed copy of the book also.
Because it is only Book Week once a year the author, illustrator pair also visited Kambalda West District High School students after the Shire of Coolgardie event and delighted close to 70 primary students with their presentation and book reading. Most enjoyed by all was the musical chairs along to the tunes of the didgeridoo played by Elvis. Sara commented on how she enjoyed the curiosity of students with all their questions about the book and hoped the story and her visit would encourage them all to look after the environment and our backyard.
A wonderful morning was had by all children. Thank you for celebrating Book week with us at the Kambalda Public Library.
