On 5 December 2024, the Shire of Coolgardie celebrated International Volunteer Day with a special “Thank a Volunteer” Sundowner event, bringing together 33 community members from various local volunteer groups. Held at the Coolgardie Community Resource Centre, this heartfelt gathering aimed to recognise and appreciate the incredible contributions of volunteers who make Coolgardie a welcoming, safe, and vibrant place to live.
The Shire was fortunate to receive a $1,000 grant through the Department of Communities’ “Thank a Volunteer Day” Grants Program. This generous support helped bring the event to life and allowed the community to come together and show their gratitude to those who give their time so selflessly.
Shire President Malcolm Callum delivered an emotional speech, highlighting the vital role volunteers play in regional towns, where resources are often limited. “Volunteers are the backbone of our community,” he said. “It’s not just about the effort; it’s about the spirit they bring and the example they set for the next up and coming generation – our youth.”
Representatives from a range of community and volunteer groups attended, including the Coolgardie RSL, Coolgardie Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service, St John WA, Coolgardie Youth Club, and more. Each group plays a crucial role in the town, from providing emergency services to offering youth activities and fostering a sense of belonging for all.
The event was a reminder of the collective strength of Coolgardie’s volunteer network and an invitation to others to join in. Whether you're interested in helping with community events, supporting local groups, or simply lending a hand when needed, there are many ways to get involved.
For those curious about volunteering opportunities, the Coolgardie Community Resource Centre is the perfect starting point. Staff are available Monday to Friday to provide information and connect individuals with local groups. You can also reach out via email at counter@coolgardie.wa.gov.au.
A big thank you once again to the Department of Communities for their generous donation, which made this special day possible. The Shire of Coolgardie is proud of its volunteer community and looks forward to seeing the spirit of giving continue to thrive in the years to come.
