Call for community input to tourism strategy

The Shire of Coolgardie is requesting feedback from members of the community to develop a modern and up to date Tourism Strategy.

The Shire is developing a Tourism Strategy to diversify the local economy, grow tourism visitation and maximise tourism’s contribution to the Shire’s economic success.

The Strategy will guide tourism development and destination management for the next five years and will help ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the sector.

Shire President, Malcolm Cullen said intrastate visitation had noticeably increased since travel restrictions were lifted in WA and that the Shire hopes to act on this significant tourism opportunity.

“Never before have we had so many Western Australians looking locally for their holidays and leisure experiences,” said Cr Cullen.

“I’ve heard that caravans and four-wheel drives are sold out across the State - we’ve seen a notable increase in the number of caravans and camper trailers lining the main street in Coolgardie in recent weeks.”

“It’s vital that the Shire capitalises on this unprecedented opportunity and continues to develop and improve the region’s tourism offering.”

An online survey has been created for community members to provide feedback on tourism experiences and destinations within the Shire.

“We look forward to adopting a ‘whole-of-community’ approach to the development of our Tourism Strategy, engaging with Council, Shire staff, businesses and community on how they think we can improve our tourism offering,” said Cr Cullen.

The survey is currently open and will close 5pm on 11 September 2020.
