Every year, the Shire of Coolgardie recognises and acknowledges individuals, community groups and organisations for the contributions they have made to our community.
In the past year Australia has faced immense challenges – drought, bushfire, and the coronavirus pandemic. Through these tough times, the Shire of Coolgardie’s community has risen to the occasion by supporting one another which is evidenced in the sheer number of nominations received for this year’s Australia Day Awards.
Throughout the Shire, we received an impressive 41 nominations – what an awesome result.
Below are your nominees and overall winners for the Shire of Coolgardie.

Community Group - This is presented to a community group or committee in the Shire of Coolgardie that has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

Judumul Advisory Aboriginal Corporation
CAPS Kurrawang Students
WINNER - Judumul Advisory Aboriginal Corporation
Nominated for their project, - The identification and marking of unmarked Aboriginal graves in the Coolgardie Cemetery. 70 markers were placed on graves in November and December 2020. This is an important milestone in acknowledging the place of Aboriginals in the history of the town.
Youth Award - This Award is presented to an individual under 25 years of age who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

WINNER – Jarrod Hourigan
Nominated twice this year for his assistance with the Judumul project as well as volunteering for the Coolgardie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. He also coaches the junior Fire Brigade running team.
Corporate Citizen Award - Presented to a business or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to the community in the Shire of Coolgardie. We have many in Coolgardie this year, which truly reflects what a wonderful community we have here.

Nominated for the supporting the Seniors Christmas and Seniors Have a Go day through kind donations. They offer support whenever needed and really shows their community support.
Citizen Award - This award is presented to an individual over 25 years of age who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

Nominated for his generosity and confidentiality to those in need. Corey has donated food, vouchers, accommodation and gifts to stranded visitors, and also hosted a Christmas Lunch that was open to everyone.
Kambalda Nominees and Winners
Community Group - This is presented to a community group or committee in the Shire of Coolgardie that has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

St John Kambalda
WINNER – St John Kambalda
St John Kambalda volunteers have provided valuable and life changing service to the people of Kambalda during 2020. This includes assisting other emergency services during the bushfire season, provide front line emergency response during lockdown, assisting in the transporting and facilitating of the Meals on Wheels service and attending community events. There combined hours for 2020 exceed 3000.

WINNER – Madeline Keast
Maddie is a St John volunteer and has committed to over 240 hours in 2020 to service the needs of the community. During the pandemic, she took on the responsibility of attending to those who required help. She has saved countless lives and is a mentor to her peers at the age of 20.

WINNER - Gold Fields St Ives
The Shire of Coolgardie recognised that community members may require additional support during COVID19 self-isolation and implemented the Meals on Wheels service. Gold Fields St Ives have funded this project from the start and were committed to the continuation of this project throughout 2020.

WINNER - Bianca Johnston
Bianca was nominated 3 times this year. She is heavily involved in numerous committees. She is the secretary for the Kambalda Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, where she is a highly skilled fire fighter and attends call outs in the community for fire or accidents. She also volunteers countless hours to coordinate the juniors. She is the secretary for the Nickeltown Flounderers as well as the treasurer for the Kambalda Junior Soccer Club. All this while working!
