The Shire of Coolgardie hosted its annual Blessing of the Roads ceremony on Tuesday, 13 April 2022, praying for the safety of our road users during the Easter holiday period.
The state wide community road safety campaign, in the lead up to and during the Easter long weekend brings together first responders, community members and the community as whole every year with the aim of sharing the road safety message when many people travel long distances to visit family, friends or holiday destinations.
Promoted by the WA Local Government Associations RoadWise program, the event not only promotes greater safety for motorists, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians during the traditionally busy Easter holidays but also aims to work towards a long term vision of a road transport system where crashes resulting in death or serious injury are virtually eliminated.
Deputy Shire President Cr. Tracey Rathbone welcomed all attendees to the event and shared the very important message about road safety, urging those in attendance to keep our roads accident free ahead of the long weekend but to also be patient with interstate travellers who may not be familiar with our roads and traffic conditions.
Representatives of our emergency services were invited to come forward and contribute to the ceremony held at Lions Park with Sergeant Ryan Devine from the Kambalda Police Station highlighting that sadly road trauma in a small community such as Kambalda impacts everyone and urges our community members to do the right thing. We should not be willing to accept that anyone should die or be seriously injured on our roads.
Father Stephens from Kalgoorlie prayed for the safety of all road users and for the emergency services staff as part of the event. After all it is our emergency services and first responders who often deal with road trauma during this time and more so now that our boarders are open again and families are travelling to see their friends and loved ones during the holidays.
Representatives from Gold Fields St Ives, Kambalda Police Station, Kambalda St Johns, Kambalda Mens Shed, Shire of Coolgardie staff and community members attended the event who were all in support of the annual Easter road safety campaign.
Following the ceremony in the park, everyone was invited back to the Kambalda Public Library for a morning tea with hot cross buns and easter eggs.
